Migration History Project: Liverpool City, South-Western Sydney

Current project

An illustrated history of settlement in the Liverpool City local government area was commissioned for Stage One of this project and contracted to historian Virginia Macleod. The history researched all waves of migration from the late 18th century to the present including the First Fleet Colonial Europeans, convict secondary punishment, Italian and German wartime internees at Holsworthy, post-Second World War 'New Australians' and post-White Australia migration by Indo-Chinese refugees and Arabic-speaking communities.

The history assisted the Liverpool Regional Museum in developing community exhibitions and a heritage trail. Commencing at the Museum, the trail complements other Western Sydney cultural tourism initiatives. The trail is supported by Liverpool City, NSW Migration Heritage Centre and the Heritage Office, Department of Planning (NSW).

In Stage Two, local communities were encouraged to bring family heritage collections associated with the experience of migration and settlement to workshops to help record their memories.

The Liverpool City Migration History Project is a NSW Migration Heritage Centre partnership initiative with the Casula Powerhouse, a cultural facility of Liverpool City Council.
