Belongings: Post-WW2 Migration Memories & Journeys

Current project

>> View Belongings exhibition online

Belongings captures the personal experiences underlying Australia's post-war migration wave by telling the stories of former migrants who arrived between 1945 and 1974. Former migrants share their experiences through personal mementos, photographs and memories, in their own words. Some items are treasured objects brought from the 'old country'; others are souvenirs of the journey out; or keepsakes from their first home or job. All help us understand how migration changed their lives and – through the cultures and traditions they brought with them – the lives of Australians forever.

The memories in Belongings were co-ordinated by Andrea Fernandes, the NSW Migration Heritage Centre's Project Officer, through a series of partnership projects with Orange City Council, City of Botany Bay Council, Co.As.It., Sydney Jewish Museum and Tweed Shire Council. New memories are being added month by month. New partnerships include AlburyCity, Fairfield City Council, the Leeton Italian Heritage Group and Australian Lebanese Historical Society. In late 2007, Andrea Fernandes will be recording interviews with former migrants living in the Auburn Council area.
