Project description

Beirut to Baghdad is the Powerhouse's latest cooperative project with Arabic-speaking Australians, and part of the Wattan project, initiated by the Powerhouse in 1998 to explore and document the diverse experiences of Australia's Arabic-speaking community.

By working closely with the local community - both its young and old - the Museum was able to capture intriguing personal stories in both English and Arabic.

In the exhibition the community share their memories and associations of Middle-Eastern costumes, textiles, ceramics, metalware, tiles, coins and antiquities collected by the Museum over the past century, presenting a mix of voices and visions and bringing new life and meaning to ancient artefacts.

Beirut to Baghdad is the first Powerhouse Museum collection-based exhibition to be showcased within the Australian Communities Gallery and is on display at the address below until THURSDAY 27 JANUARY 2005. Museum hours are 10am-5pm daily (closed Xmas Day). General admission fees apply.
