« previous || next »

Gaol record of Samuel Dykes, alias Robert Lorando, identified as a Siamese national, 1885, State Records NSW.

The story of criminals and convicts is a familiar one to Australian history. Native to Siam, Samuel Dykes, alias Robert Lorando, was arrested in NSW on three separate occasions for theft. Samuel Dykes arrived in Australia on the Nelson; he was 20 at the time of his third arrest and identified himself as Presbyterian. He was described as five feet seven inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. It is not known what became of Samuel Dykes, or whether he ever returned to Siam.
