Project description

The Fairfield City motto says to ‘celebrate diversity’, and that’s exactly what the cultural tour aims to do. From spiritual temples to a bustling commercial centre, from kitsch to classical, from ancient traditions to contemporary cultural development, this self-drive audio tour takes you to fascinating places in one of Australia’s most culturally diverse neighbourhoods.

Fairfield City has always been a destination for migrant and refugee communities wishing to make a home in Australia. The cultural tour takes the listener on a journey through these layers of migration history and heritage. Through visits to the many culturally significant sites and places of worship, the tour creates a greater understanding and appreciation of the different cultures and communities in the area.

In order to develop the tour, extensive consultation was undertaken with Fairfield City’s many communities. This culminated in research material which provided the basis for the tour.

What did the project achieve?

The final product deriving from the project – a self-drive audio tour of the area on CD/Audio Cassette – promotes the religious, architectural and cultural heritage and history of the area and encourages cultural learning and exchange. The audio package includes a map and booklet which details aspects of the tour, services and amenities. The tour can be purchased from Fairfield City Museum and Gallery (telephone 02 9609 3993) and the Museum of Sydney shop for $16.95.

The project – which values Fairfield City’s diverse cultural heritage – was a vehicle for Fairfield City Council to enhance their community relationships and for local communities to exchange and interact.

The tour was awarded a commendation in the Multicultural Heritage category at the National Trust of Australia (NSW) Heritage Awards 2002.
